1. Mechaman

This is a drama based on the life of Cho Kuroyanagi, a woman who lived during WWII. Like Grave of the Fireflies, this could have easily been done with live-action, but unlike GotF this one is much happier in tone , and it tells about the pre-war era as well. The characters look a lot like they were from a Studio Ghibli film, but unfortunately the animation does not. The soundtrack is very old fashioned, meaning that it is often overdramatic. Fortunately the story is compelling enough that I didn't fall asleep.
