Anyone who knows even the slightest bit about
Christian theology won't be able to ignore the intrinsic flaws
in this short collection of stories from the much longer manga
series. Chihaya and Katseguya are a pair of angels sent to observe
and judge the people of Earth, the former looking for the positives,
the latter looking for the negatives. Somehow, the pair keep getting
drawn into dangerous situations, mostly because of Chihaya's innocent
concern for those in trouble. This is clearly a story meant for
teenaged girls, absolutely dripping with angst and pretty boys.
Like Angel Sanctuary, there's a disturbing ignorance
of the Christian faith and quite a lot of specifics are made up
just to make things more exciting.
The animation has moments of decency, but generally
looks quite poor, and the action sequences especially suffer because
of this. Of the characters, the most prominent is Chihaya, who
may be sweet and sensitive, but tends to act like a sniveling
idiot. Likewise, it's hard to connect with the aloof Katseguya
and the raving Messiah. The writing is mostly fluff and overwrought
dramatics, and the dialogue can be downright painful. Part of
the trouble is that the episodes don't directly connect with each
other, and there's a great amount of material missing. Not that
we really miss it, considering how bad the surviving material
turns out to be.
