A pretty pink-haired girl named Ohri ends up in the service
of a determined young priest, Olivier, who has left his order to discover the
truth about a fallen god. Of course, they don't get very far before running into
various baddies and rivals who require the generous use of Ohri's sorcerous abilities
to defeat. Gestalt is another of those quasi-medieval fantasy series where
every character has big, pastel-colored hair and battles are fought using showy
attack spells. The OAV's two episodes introduce all the players and set things
up for a larger storyline to follow, but is fairly self-contained. Regrettably,
the writing leaves much to be desired. With a limp plot, empty characters, and
plenty of fight scenes, this show is mindless entertainment incarnate. Most noticeably
lacking is any successful humor, as I doubt we're actually meant to take any of
the proceedings seriously, and the tepid dialogue is a sore point. The show is
simply too similar to countless other fantasy anime, and lacks the quality to
make it stand out. The visuals of the OAV are great,
especially in the second episode where Ohri really gets to let loose and show
her stuff, but there's nothing new or innovative. The writing isn't so much silly
as downright stupid, and none of the characters are remotely interesting. Whether
the show would have been any better with additional episodes to help with development
is questionable. Good for eye candy, but not for anything else, Gestalt
is probably one to skip. |

Gestalt follows the adventures of a priest, Olivier,
who had left the order in search of the truth about "G." Accompaning
him is Ohri, a young lady who (after having her "silence" dispelled)
turns out to be some sort of "God that came down to Earth" of sorts.
Hot on their trail is the dark-elf-for-hire Suzu. We
should all get used to seeing anime done in CGI. Besides; hearing about the manga
version of it is news to me. This is a cute show, by the way. It's got some fanservice;
like cute females with large breasts and short skirts, and handsome guys. Recommended. |

Gestalt is basically a bunch of RPG game elements combined
into two episodes. Gestalt isn't exactly the most original title out there,
as I recognized a number of abilities and characteristics taken from different
games, including the pop-up message boxes. I still found it to be an interesting
show; it's pretty lighthearted fun in a Slayers sort of way. I really liked some
of the character designs as well, but some of those guys look a little too feminine.
Not a bad title, but not a great title either. |

A quick 2 shot OVA, Gestalt's abrupt "ending"
left me wanting more. While not a stellar series, I did manage to get a great
number of hearty laughs out of it. An RPG parody Gestalt's humor may be
an acquired taste. Animation is about TV series quality, with heavy use of digital
painting, and early computer effects. Definitely not a quality show, but I found
it an enjoyable way to spend 60 minutes. |
