The quality stays constant throughout the series, with the end's animation increasing a bit as the duelling becomes fundamental. One has to expect repeated music and repeated graphics for shows that are this big, so none of those cause Gundam Wing to lose much. Oh, and the dreaded repeat episodes.
There are three things that irked me about this series:
1.) "I will destroy you!" "You will be destroyed!" "I will not let myself be destroyed!" Mind you, this is a curse that only an English Dub has, so keep that in mind. As in, do not watch an English Dub.
2.) "HEEEEEEEEEEEERO!!" Relena Peacecraft's screeching voice whenever Heero arrived on the scene to either state his hate for her, want to kill her, save her, kill generally useless Leo pilots, et cetera, et cetera. Her voice is a War crime.
3.) "It's a Gundam! Aaargh--" **BOOM** This phrase is used over and over again. Cool a few times, cliché a bunch more, and then it goes to ridiculous. The Leo pilots seem highly inept at fighting, so they trained them how to create proper death cries. That must have saved them trillions in taxpayer's money.
Otherwise, it was a surprise. The series' speed changes like a broken gearshift, but when it speeds up, it's good. When it slows down, it's OK too. Gundam Wing is about the pilots, not the machines, which is refreshing. This also leads to a lot of touchy feely moments, which will forever cause homosexual jokes made at the pilots.
However, the touches upon love, friendship, struggle, and peace add to this series. As much as I ike war movies, it was an interesting twist to have the five pilots slowly change their goals from fighting for their colonies to fighting for peace. While barely accented in the series, that touch is great in Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz.

Gundam Wing is not a typical robot war anime. It is
a very well written story where five young kids was send to earth from the space
colony in the After Colony year 195 of. All five main male characters are not
perfect to start with [they start out like a robot without emotion], but they
adapt and learn to care about people around them. I especially like Relena Darlian
not because of her unique name, but because she is one of the strongest female
supporting characters I have ever seen in an anime. Relena's will to sacrifice
her own good to achieve peace is admirable. The only regret that I had for her
is that Heero and Relena didn't really establish a "true" relationship.
Their relationship is iffy at the best, which is kind of disappointing. The art
for this anime is not that great and this is probably because this animation is
quite old. However, the plot makes up for the poor animation quality. The plot
pits each character against his or her fears. The most wonderful thing about this
animation is that it actual shows how soldiers, citizens and generals suffered
because of the war. This rarely happens in a big robot war animation. I
am not the biggest Gundam fan in the world, but this animation's plot and
characters surprised me. I was expecting the plot to be this good never mind the
characters. Watch this anime all at once [I watched 49 episodes in like 2 days].
It is highly addictive [seriously, I couldn't stop once I started episode 1] watch
this anime at your own risk. |

Featuring a set of likable characters and a complicated, intriguing
story, this alternate timelime Gundam series is heavy on plot and technicality,
but rather lacking in humanity. Though the pilots are all well portrayed and interesting,
the bulk of the show's focus goes to covering the larger-than-life political figures
and constant mecha battles on land, sea, and air. With an ambitious scope that
covers the entirety of a massive war from start to finish, there's just not enough
time for adequate reflection on the events. For action fans, there's plenty of
warfare amidst the speech-making, but anyone looking for something more personal
and character-driven won't find much. The animation
is geared towards making the warfare look good, and is a little static on the
whole. The character designs are utilitarian, though the pilots are all obviously
bishonen. The series is good at coming up with characters that have strong personalities,
but hardly has room for them all. Minor characters like Sally Po and Lucretia
Noin are at least as interesting as pilots Quatre and Trowa, but simply aren't
developed due to the constraints of the plot. Though the concepts and ideas presented
are intriguing, the series becomes so dialogue-heavy because of them, the energy
often flags. Complex and engaging, Gundam Wing is an interesting action
series that tries to be more intelligent and thought-stimulating, but sacrifices
quite a lot of entertainment value to do it. |

Not being a huge war fan, Gundam in general is just
not my cup of tea. Gundam Wing however is the best of the Gundam
shows I've seen. Some of the pilots are more likable than others - Quatre for
example is just the coolest kid ever, while Hero needs a bit of a personality
revamp. Noin, an Oz soldier, is the only cool girl in the show, while Relena is
the kind of girl I would slap silly if I had the misfortune of meeting her. The
Gundams themselves with their different setups and weapons are pretty damn cool.
The mecha, combined with Quatre and Zechs, are really the only good parts of this
show and make it worth watching once. |

I liked Gundam Wing, but as a light show not to be taken
too seriously. If you look closely, the mediocre animation and rehashed plot and
characters will spoil the series for you. Gundam Wing was the first Gundam
not based on the original Gundam universe, so it loses touch with the great
detailed mass of Gundam that existed before it. The only things it seems
to have over the original Gundam are better drawing, the fact that it stands
alone, and subtitles. Enjoy Gundam Wing, but for something better, get
a hold of the original Gundam. |
