I'm not gonna call Pioneer by its new name. To me they're always gonna be Pioneer. Or atleast AIC. These are the type of people that would do a show like The SoulTaker and would still fit an onsen / bath scene or an Obon festival kimono / yukata scene somewhere. At any rate, Hand Maid May is probably one of the more senseless series that I had a chance to watch since... well... Tenchi Muyo.

You have Nanbara and his insane, in-your-face attitude. You have Kazuya and his absent-mindedness. May and Kasumi with their girl-next-doorish competition over Kazuya's heart. Rena and her lollicon brattiness, Sara and her insane lust for ramen noodles, Kei and her "processing loop," Mami and her "are-are-are-are-are..." A new bunch of lunatics, says the back cover.

Personally, I think it just sends the characters of El Hazard into the current settings. And even though the series was senseless; it had its serious moments when the characters stop being typecasted and started trying to rescue each other.

The first time I watched this series, I was quite new to anime, and I thought the idea of Maids back then was novel, these days I still like the idea of a maid series and I strive to make sure I have all maid series made, but, noticeably, re-watching these type of series actually makes me turn away because of the awkward situations that I know are about to arise. For the majority each episode is devoted to a new character, which, if you like cute girls is great, each character is super cute and for most of them prone to panty shots, however it does become a bit disturbing when the girl is about 10 or a bit younger but well I'm sure someone out there liked it. Ahem. Nanbara is one of my favourite ever characters, amazingly over the top and refers to himself as Kazukis Best Friend / Mortal Enemy which he manages to portray quite well, a fantastic achievement! Basically this is a fun series, which, just towards the end, tries to attach a fairly complicated storyline to itself, which didn't work too well but didn't detract from the series at all which was good. In retrospect I enjoyed this series a lot more than say Love Hina, some aggression is funny, however, throughout that series, Keitaro was constantly being attacked by a trained swordswoman, mecha turtles armed with missiles and other heavy weaponry, and an extremely moody woman with powerful right and left hooks, all of which got very annoying because in almost every scene Keitaro was blasted off in to the distance which didn't allow for ANY character depth or even romantic situations, the evil world of harem, that series was created to show the downside of being surrounded by cute girls. Thankfully in this series Kazuki is a nice likeable intelligent fellow who had some good luck befall him, and is capable of walking and talking without constantly falling and landing in awkward positions and without constantly saying things to aggravate the edgy females. Hand Maid May is the thinking man's Love Hina.

A show built around fanservice that does work. From the beginning the fanservice is pretty blatant and well used ^_^ (Where is that USB cable hooked up to May?). HMM is about a 8" high robot that is mistakenly sent to a student. Saotome Kazuya is studying in the field of robotics research at school when he gets the perfect example of how AI/robots are suppose to work (Cyber Doll May). But an interest in May beyond her technical merits is started. The series reminds me of Love Hina in the goofy sense but is a very enjoyable series with tons of fanservice that adds a great aspect to the whole series.

If you like romantic comedies, then you won't be able to resist the cuteness and naughtiness that is Hand Maid May. Although not terribly original, its execution of everything you expect from a romantic comedy, is well done. The show is also very energetic, especially Nanbara, who might rub you the wrong way at first, but at heart he's really a good pal of Saotome. Hand Maid May made me smile and feel all warm and gooey inside (maybe slightly in an ecchi way too), and that's a good thing.

After rewatching Hand Maid May I decided to revamp my review, as well as bump up its score. Hand Maid May falls nicely into the geek surrounded by cute girls genre of anime. The story revolves around Kazuya who's researching robotics/AI who one day gets a package containing cute 8 inch cyber doll named May. Of course he slowly gains more cute cyber dolls. While the plot doesn't develop too much, there is alot of great interaction between the characters as well as my favorite... loads of fanservice. Fans of Tenchi, Oh My Goddess and Love Hina will definitely want to check this one out, though it's even more character driven (less story, more fun characters) then the before mentioned titles.
