The only major problem I see in this short three part series
is the length itself. I suppose the third episode does present a touch of finality,
but I saw some promise in this series and I wanted to see more. It's
a cute series with a cute angel accompanying an angry, yet kind-hearted, kid.
Doesn't sound too original, but it was still entertaining. Happy World
was really not bad at all. Since it was so short, I just felt myself saying, "Okay.now
what?" |

Happy World! starts out nice enough. Unlucky Takeshi
has the worst day ever when a string of events causes his death. Well, he would've
been dead if it were not for Elle, an angel who comes to the rescue. She's an
innocent little angel, unfamiliar with the ways of the human world, and donning
lots of halos. Predictably she ends up hanging around Takeshi to take care of
him. But this is no Oh My Goddess! and Takeshi is definitely no Keiichi.
Apparently Takeshi can give his misfortune away
to another person, but when a little girl is about to inherit his bad luck, he
has a change of heart and takes the curse as a burden of his own. But don't let
that fool you - he's a grouch, hates life, finds Elle's presence annoying, and
hits her often. The rest of the show is the usual predictable fare, except badly
directed, lousy humor, and Takeshi slapping Elle some more. Elle
is told not to bother with the human world because there is a lot of pain and
suffering, but Elle feels that the human world is an interesting one because people
fight to make the best out of their lives. How she got that opinion after dealing
with Takeshi is a mystery though. |

Happy World! is an OAV consisting of only 3 episodes.
It starts out promising in the first episode: a young boy given nothing but bad
luck is given an angel to protect him and to improve his luck. Does he appreciate
her? No. Does he seem even the least bit grateful? No. Could he care less. Most
likely so. The angel, Elle, is innocent enough. This is her first time being in
the human world, wearing clothes, and walking, and the boy she came to protect,
Takeshi, is practically a jerk to her and won't tolerate her. If Takeshi were
nicer, Happy World! would be more similar to Oh My Goddess! But
it isn't. It's nothing like it. The second episode
becomes filler. Takeshi's still mean and Elle's still innocent. The next episode
is even more filler, except for something mentioned about Elle having to return
to the heavens that isn't mentioned anymore in the episode. And there we have
the end of a series that started out like it was going somewhere, and ended up
going nowhere at all. For a 26+ episode series, these three episodes would have
been fine. However, for an OAV people have to buy that ends in only three episodes,
more meat should have been put out there! I had high expectations for this show,
but it ended with great disappointment. |
