A Christian minister's son, a Buddhist monk's son, and a Shinto
priest's daughter make up the Holy Student Council at very unusual high school.
Haunted by a multitude of colorful ghosts, including seven official "school
spirits," the school depends on the Student Council to keep everything running
smoothly with their own special powers. This zany supernatural comedy has a distinctively
different style from many of its contemporaries, using a lot of sight gags and
Monty Python-esque bizarreness. All the characters are instantly likeable,
though they never bother to grow past their original shtick. The few attempts
made at serious drama generally fall flat while the purely comedic material consistantly
delivers. In addition to the usual madcap hijinks, there's also a more risque
element, particularly involving tough-girl Mutsuki, who gets massive crushes on
little boys, and Hanako, a scantily-clad schoolgirl spirit who haunts the bathroom.
Going against the norms for ghost stories, everything
about the series is bright and colorful. The animation is low-end stuff, but perfectly
suitable for the highly exaggerated designs. The writing and dialogue are inventive
and fun, though the catchphrases are in slightly embarrassing English. Talking
anatomical models, living statues, and even a giant in the gym join in the madness,
but probably the best character is the hapless council president, Haruto, who
is perpetually trying to resign his post and have a normal school life. The energy
and charm of the series make it a great diversion, and it wisely ends before it
has the chance to repeat itself.
