This eight episode OVA series continues from the original OVA
series. If you have not watched HxH and the first OVA, it is useless to watch
this one nor will you understand this review.
Killua
and Gon finally attended the auction in order to obtain one of the rare Greed
Island games. But a mysterious man spent half of his fortune and bought all the
Greed Island games in stock. The two soon discovers that the man is a hunter looking
to employ other able hunters to play the game. Killua and Gon realized that they
could just player selection exam and play in the game without obtaining it. With
more Nen training, the two boys were accepted and they readied themselves for
the game. The Spiders also obtained a copy of the game, using the only method
they know how of course.
The art is similar to the
first OVA and the music became more lighthearted. Like the music, the theme of
this OVA is light compared to the first OVA, where darkness and death occupied
most clips. This OVA concentrated on the journey of Killua and Gon so the other
main characters were entirely left out (no chain smashing Culapica). The rule
of the game is carefully explained and the atmosphere is very provocative. Basically,
the player can collect cards that appear in the game and use them as sorcery cards.
Players in the game steal cards off of each other using various methods (oh gee
guess how Spiders obtain their cards). The two boys meet a mysterious young girl
who happened to be Wing's master (what the hell? You will find out). To make a
long story short, this OVA is very nicely done and it is good while it lasted.
That is, while it lasted. Eight episodes are not
nearly enough to cover the entire epics. And as expected, the story is STILL not
finished as the developers get into the nasty habit of raising more and more interesting
subplots and leaving them unanswered. A single clue wasn't given toward finding
Gon's father and when the OVA ended, the boys achieved nothing major in the game,
except perhaps learn a few more nen techniques from the mysterious girl. Is it
possible to beat the game? Can the spiders really cheat their way into beating
the game? Don't worry, I can't answer them because the answers weren't given.
It was cool to watch people in the game cast spells and stuff using cards (a few
good nen action scenes as well), and trust me I can really go for another fifty
episodes if they have it. I don't know the reason why this OVA ended so abruptly,
but it sure takes a star off the rating.
High:
Just as good as HxH and HxH OVA 1. A lot of good subplots raised
and really brought me to the edge of my chair.
Low: Except those subplots
weren't developed. It ended more abruptly than the first OVA.
Bottom Line:
HxH fans, if you hunger for more, this is obviously the next step. It is
a must watch for addicts, although the ending is disappointing (not that much
of an ending anyway).
