4. End of Hearts

During his test, Keitaro falls asleep and wakes up to realize he has not done much and did what he could with his last five minutes. Realizing that he will fail, he decides to run away again, not being able to confront Naru. Keitaro ends up on an island and has decided to help a girl fulfill her dream of finding her father who has been reported missing for ten years. Naru, who of course likes Keitaro, decides to bring that idiot back and the gang follows her. Story line with the turtles is once again corny but the story between Naru and Keitaro was entertaining. Not the best Love Hina special, but it’s worth the watch.

Here is a good example of being careful in what you wish for. When I finished watching the Love Hina Christmas Special I had high hopes that it would have the humor and slapstick comedy that I cherished from the earlier episodes of the TV series. Well the Love Hina Spring Special has the comedy, but it wasn't what I had in mind. Simply stated, too many turtles! I thought there were too many during the TV series, so imagine my surprise when Keitaro goes to some island to find a lost turtle civilization. What makes this worse is that Keitaro went to the island because he always runs away from his problems and pretend they will go away. While the Love Hina Spring Special is not a complete abomination, it is definitely not what I would expect from Love Hina. I would recommend it only to tie up some loose ends from the show and hopefully you will enjoy the humor more than I did.

Keitaro, Naru and Mutsumi attempt yet again to pass the final TokyoU entrance exam. Keitaro believing he screwed up, runs away to a the remote island Pararakels (which seems to inhabit lots of turtles). Naru tries to bring him back, followed by the rest of the girls. A lot of fun and cute stuff happens on the way, and as always there are enough large, bouncing breasts in view. There is some kind of resolution to the series, yet two subplots introduced in this special are rather unresolved and unsatisfying: Shinobu's wish to confess to the one she loves, and Nyamo's quest for her grandfather and the ancient turtle civilization of Paralantis.

Unless a 2nd Love Hina TV series is in the works, the spring special looks to be the wrap up episode. Thankfully it does a good job of pulling things together. Once again it's time for the Todai entrance exam and once again Keitaro botches it and runs off. This time he ends up on a ship to an island out in the pacific, where he meets a new character, Nyamo (imagine Shinobu with dark skin and a ponytail). Naru gives chase quickly, followed by the rest of the Hinata girls. As usual the story revolves around Keitaro and Naru's relationship, as Naru begins to come to terms with her feelings for Keitaro. A great ending (maybe?) for a great series. Essential viewing for fans of the series.
