Despite Manga Entertainment advertising Macross 2 as
a movie, it really is a 6 part OVA series. Hibiki is a young cocky and arrogant
journalist who brings back a pretty Marduk emulator named Ishtar to Earth during
a battle in space. The Marduk uses mind control on the Zentraedi to use them in
their quest to conquer the universe. Their emulators sing war songs to motivate
the Zentraedi into battle and neutralizing Earth's own "singing attack".
Anyway, Ishtar experiences "culture" and realizes that songs can be
used for more than just fighting wars. Together with Hibiki and ace pilot Sylvie
they try to save the universe once again with the power of music. Sounds cheesy?
It is :-) I really liked the designs and the music, especially the 80's sounding
trumpety battle music. The pop songs were utterly forgettable though. There is
the potential for a good show, but Macross 2 pales in comparison to Macross
Do You Remember Love and Macross Plus. There's no real epic feel to
it even though it has thousands of ships. It probably doesn't help that it doesn't
have enough characters to feel something for. A little bit more emotional impact
goes a long way in this kind of show.
