Do you Remember Love was intended to be a documentary like film created within the Macross timeline (a film within a film of sorts) that told the epic story of "space war one" and many of the people predominantly involved. Interesting enough; within the time line it was this movie and its telling of the story of Lynn Minmei that inspired Myung Fan Long (then fifteen years old) to peruse a carrier singing, which was instrumental in the events of Macross Plus. Essentially this is a retelling of the events of Super Dimensional Fortress Macross.

Despite being a retelling this movie features completely redone animation, a slightly different order and even addition of and change to many events. Remarkably the animation still holds it own against modern works which is quite impressive considering that this movie was produced in 1984. The characters are portrayed with added maturity and the central love triangle is far more fleshed out, making this feature more compelling then the original in some respects. Considering however that this movie means to tell the story of the 38 episode SDF Macross series in a mere two hours it does not stand on its own all that well, and in my opinion requires at least some prior understanding of SDF Macross to be fully enjoyed. Definately recommended to anyone that has seen and enjoyed most if not all of the original, or to anyone that thinks they may. Regardless it is worth one viewing.

Macross: Do You Remember Love? is a retelling of the Macross series. Trying to compact such a long series into 100 minutes is a monumental task. Some story changes were necessary and lots of detail is glossed over, not to mention the giant plotholes that you can fit a planet in. Even so, the creators succeeded in bringing most of the excitement into the movie. It's like watching a very long music video or a highlight reel. Though some action scenes were a bit confusing, overall this show has one of the most impressive animated battle scenes, with a gazillion missiles and laser beams flying all over the screen. Then there's the whole soap opera and love triangle, which seems cheesy at first, but really does work well. Macross DYRL is way too compact to be considered deep, but it's one hell of a ride.
