Lillian is a respectable all-girls school with an interesting social structure, in which privileged seniors usually adopt "petite souers"(little sisters, in French)...and there seems to be lots of lesbian references and allusions. However, this anime is far from even being considered sexual. There are no panty shots or enormous breasts popping out at every scene. The artwork is very elegant, but extremely cute as well. Basically, Maria-sama ga Miteru tells about the daily lives of its students without being overly comedic or dramatic (however, many scenes are funny, but more in a cute-like aspect, and there are dramatic themes present as well). Much like To Heart or Kokoro Library, Maria-sama is a "slice of life"anime, which is also fairly slowly paced and very character driven.
Overall, this is a fun anime to watch during your free time. The characters are very likeable, with Yumi, Sachiko, and Sei being my favorites and you'll probably agree after watching this.
