This movie was scary! And weird! Excuse the gratuitous exclamation marks if you will. Perfect Blue is a very original premise for an anime; it involves the fragile psyche of a pop princess turned actress. Her subsequent difficulties with making the transition, including questionable roles she is persuaded into taking, are apparently the least of her problems. The animation, especially in a few select scenes where motion is captured in almost life-like fashion, is very good and fluid. I think in some places the story moves a bit slowly, and the lack of the highly fantastic or highly comical might turn some people off. But what you basically have is a thriller with some horror added in. One of the protagonist's secret admirers is surely a sight to behold; far scarier than any anime villain I've seen in a long time, possibly ever. The message here is a question of identity, perhaps even schizophrenia, and the grotesquely obsessive behavior of people that can often lead to darker thoughts and actions. I thought a couple scenes could have been done a bit better to add to the scare factor, but this is a very enjoyable and unique movie. If you are tired of endless series, mecha fights, romances, or whatever, check out Perfect Blue. It's good!
