This movie was scary! And weird! Excuse the gratuitous exclamation marks if you will. Perfect Blue is a very original premise for an anime; it involves the fragile psyche of a pop princess turned actress. Her subsequent difficulties with making the transition, including questionable roles she is persuaded into taking, are apparently the least of her problems. The animation, especially in a few select scenes where motion is captured in almost life-like fashion, is very good and fluid. I think in some places the story moves a bit slowly, and the lack of the highly fantastic or highly comical might turn some people off. But what you basically have is a thriller with some horror added in. One of the protagonist's secret admirers is surely a sight to behold; far scarier than any anime villain I've seen in a long time, possibly ever. The message here is a question of identity, perhaps even schizophrenia, and the grotesquely obsessive behavior of people that can often lead to darker thoughts and actions. I thought a couple scenes could have been done a bit better to add to the scare factor, but this is a very enjoyable and unique movie. If you are tired of endless series, mecha fights, romances, or whatever, check out Perfect Blue. It's good!

Perfect Blue is an excellent psychological thriller. Not the genre you see often in anime. Mima is a pop idol who tries to become an actress instead, much to the chagrin of some "fans". The animation is top notch, excellently portraying extreme as well as subtle expressions. The writing is very clever, mixing reality and a TV show, making the audience wonder what is real and what isn't, while still making complete sense. The movie isn't for the squeamish though, as there are quite a few scenes featuring nudity and violence. Highly recommended, even to people who don't normally watch anime.

Perfect Blue…how almost perfect you are. Let me count the ways. You have a great story, great characters and great animation. You're thrilling, suspenseful and exciting to the end. I could probably go on and on, but I'll stop now. A movie that is based both on freedom (Mimi going out on her own from pop idoldom) and confinement (Mimi going crazy). There are some dark things that go on in this movie, but they just add to the story. This movie is highly recommended, although I do warn you that the subject matter is very mature in nature.

Ex pop-idol Mima tries to start a new life in acting and changing her clean cut image into more than a one dimensional character. So our trip begins into deconstruction of Mima's reality. During her change in career she finds the website of a devoted fan and notices how in depth her life is described on the website. Everywhere she goes she notices a fan following her every move, which drives her to the point of insanity when her co-workers start to die. I found the CHAM tunes catchy and fun to listen to after the movie was long over. Its a fun suspense film to watch and I highly recommend it.
