2. Alastor

A girl who fights with puppets is an interesting concept, and it could have been really good. Unfortunately, it was executed poorly. The fight scenes are mostly made up of single frames, and that does not keep you entertained very long. The animation is good for the most part, and the dub is average. They try to build up the characters, but it is only 45 minutes long, so they cannot build them up enough to make you care about them. I would have enjoyed this a lot more had the fight scenes been better.

Puppet Princess is an interesting OVA. At its core it's a dark, and fairly horrific story, but then at other times it will focus on some light hearted comedy. This drastic change in tone may be a bit hard for some to swallow. I personally, however, found it to be refreshing. The story follows Rangiku a young princess who uses her father's giant puppets as weapons, and Yasaburo the ninja who she hires to protect as she seeks revenge against those who brought down her family. With only 30 minutes to go on, the pacing is of course brisk, though a bit of time is reserved for minor character development and story. All in all I greatly enjoyed this OVA, and my only real complaint (and complaint about a lot of 1 episode OVAs) is that they didn't make more. Fans of violent, action filled anime should enjoy this one with it's distinct style and off color moments.
