Rune Soldier is set in the same universe as Record of Lodoss War - but unlike ROLW, Rune Soldier is a pure comedy show. Magician apprentice Louie is a rowdy confident guy, who will often use brute physical force instead of magic and wisdom. He joins an adventuring group with Genie the female warrior, Merrill the thief, and Melissa the priestess. Louie's crude methods constantly bring the girls grief, but they need someone to lug around their equipment and treasure, plus Melissa had a divine revelation that Louie is her hero who she must follow and serve. Eventually Louie starts to really make himself useful.
Rune Soldier starts off as a very funny show featuring nice character designs and artwork. Unfortunately it becomes quickly apparent that the story isn't going anywhere, and the show deteriorates into episodic mediocrity. There are some good laughs along the way, but perhaps it would've been better to halve the episode count. It's not until the end when we get a decent story arc. Also disappointing is the fact that the good artwork and animation quality becomes very uneven.
Rune Soldier has memorable characters and some very funny episodes, but might not be the best value for your money.
