Without a doubt, Sailor Moon is one of the most influential
Anime during the 90's. It was very popular series in Japan, and had the biggest
impact in Europe and America. Whether people like Sailor Moon or not, people
who like Anime know what Sailor Moon is. The series beautifully adapted
the quality based on NaokoTakeuchi's work, who was very popular for her
work from both Sailor V and Sailor Moon. The story starts out real
simple. It's about a lazy, clumsy girl, Usagi, who found a cat named Luna, and
suddenly changed her life when she transforms into a "sailor suit" dressed
heroine who saves the day from evil monster from Negaverse. Unlike the manga,
the series flows into "monster of the week" episode like Power Rangers.
But those are the minor things in the series that are to be cared less about.
The main thing about the series is the characters, both main and supporting roles.
The characters' acting really brought the emotions and excitement throughout the
series. Each episode has a lot of character developments that it made some characters
fun and adorable, and at the same time you would feel sympathy for them. The story
is very strong in many themes: love, friendship, rivalry, sacrifice, and many
more than the manga series did. The conflicts in each episode happen for most
of the time and resolve at near the end of the show, and then the battle with
the various types of monsters happen for less than 5 minutes. The story is very
serious and deeper as it goes on, and its climax rises above far beyond up to
the last episodes. All the reasons for fighting and mystery finally resolve when
the show is almost over. The animation itself is beautiful and the music is absolutely
gorgeous. Even though there were a lot of repeated battle scenes, the animation
is amazing in detailed scenes and characters' expressions. Since it was directed
by a guy, which might attract some male audiences while the series was directed
from male's point of view. I'm guessing its targeted audiences were for young
teenage girls and otaku who are into bishoujo (pretty girl) dolls (no offense!!).
Despite its beautifully animated scenes, there are some ecchi scenes such as naked
transformations into a Sailor soldier or panty shot (yes! I did notice a lot!!
The director is the same guy who did New Cutey Honey series which its transformation
was similar to Sailor Moon's). The music opening 'Moonlight Destiny' is
absolutely dazzling and brings a "serene yet sad" mood to the show.
Sailor Moon is very entertaining and enjoyable for younger generations
and memorable series in Anime history. Its popularity brought a lot of live action
series, trading card collections, action figure dolls, and many more. With its
fun characters and moving stories, Sailor Moon can be considered to be
a classic Anime, famous around the world, and no other magical girl series could
come close to its deep emotional quality.
