This series begins the massive franchise that is The Slayers,
with 3 full TV series, 5 movies, and a few OVA series. Success aside, though,
there are so many comedy shows that do everything better than this one that I
can't really recommend it to anyone. Filled with lame humor, monster-of-the-week
episodes and irritating characters, as well as ordinary animation and some of
the most forgettable music I've ever encountered, I really can't find much of
anything to like about this show. The only reason I watched this entire series
is because I'm a completist, but it was a painful venture. I've been told that
things pick up in the later seasons (Slayers Next and Slayers Try),
and are appreciably better in the OVAs and movies, but I'm not in any rush to
find out. Ugh. |

The Slayers is a more comedic approach to fantasy Anime,
with lots of jokes and cool characters. For example, the characters are usually
more concerned with where their next meal is going to come from than how to defeat
the villains. The high points are great fun, but the low points in the story tend
to drag a bit. The animation is also nothing to brag about. Despite it's weaknesses,
it's still an OK show and I think it's worth watching. |

I will never understand the draw to this series. The love that
fans give to the star, Lina Inverse, seems to me to be totally undeserved. She
is unattractive, mean spirited, and greedy. On top of that, Megumi Hayashibara
performs possibly one of her worst roles ever as Lina's voice actor. The comedy
is definitely there, but seems very forced and is rarely original. I found myself
to be extremely bored during this series, and it took me months and months of
putting it off to even finish it. The only reason it gets 2 stars is because there
was one episode that really cracked me up--I thought it might be a turning point
for the series. But then it started sucking again. |

The majority of the time while watching Slayers I found
myself bored. I quickly learned that there was only one way to watch Slayers
... no more then a couple of episodes at a time. Past the bad pacing, which pretty
much forces you to watch it in small batches to preserve your sanity, I actually
got a kick out of some of Slayers. The gags are good, though forced at
times, and the characters are a riot. Decent fantasy/comedy, though not highly
recommended for anyone that wants anything more then some very light fun. |
