Of all the Tenchi movies/OVAs/TV series, Tenchi Universe ranks at the bottom in my book. While the majority of the other Tenchi spawns went off in new random directions Tenchi Universe tried to do something truly evil... to retell the excellent OVAs in a different fashion. To me it was just lengthened, watered down Tenchi. I found that the episodes where pretty much split 50/50 good/bad, though sadly the all important ending fell under the bad section. The ending was a tad melodramatic, and I had to contain a good number of giggles at some of the "serious" parts... At least the TV series introduces Kiyone.

Compared to the OAVs, Tenchi Universe has relatively little appeal for me. While I love watching Ryoko no matter what, the TV series just seems to be quite lacking. The only characters of any real interest are Nagi and her little cabbit friend. Perhaps with a bit less filler, it would be interesting to watch, but as it is, I would certainly hope to never have to sit through the entire thing again.

You could say Tenchi Universe retells the story told in the OVA series. It takes the basic premise of various alien girls living together with Tenchi and goes in a different direction. Even though there are quite a few filler episodes in this TV series, I prefer those over the actual backstory. Tenchi Universe works much better if it's about the characters doing the things they usually do. It functions less well as an action series, as most of it is pretty standard and even boring. There were actual sweet, funny or dramatic moments I enjoyed though. Of note are the Nagi episode, the Sasami & ghost girl episode and the Yosho's wife episode. If I were to rewatch Tenchi Universe it would have to be single episodes instead of the whole thing.

Tenchi Universe is a good series in it's own right. Has too many filler episodes for my liking, but the Time and Space entries, the main storyline and the good animation more than make up for it. Seeing Tenchi and the other characters in alternate realities are hilarious, and the best one is the Pretty Sammy one (which later became a series of it's own). The best of the two TV series.
