As far as the story goes I can be brief, it’s very vague. A young puppet-boy (like Pinocchio) wants to become human and therefore needs to deliver a special artifact to some ancient tree. The artifact contains the spirit of warrior-woman gone mad and if the artifact should reach the tree it most certainly bring catastrophe to the world.
Ah, forget it. It’s impossible to describe without sounding weird. The movie last for more than 2 hours and is way more complex than that. I didn't get all of it to begin with. So the story is interesting, but sometimes incomprehensible.
Like, for instance, Akira. It tries to tell you to many things and doesn't wrap everything up very well.
The similarities between Akira and Palme don’t end there.
Palme is a young boy whose taken into a gang of street “thugs” (although a bit nicer and younger), and who desperately wants to be what he can never be and the movie goes all apocalyptic in the end.
It also borrows elements from a lot of fairytales like Pinocchio.
What sets it apart from the crowd is the way it is presented aurally and visually. The soundtrack is very hypnotizing/tranquil. Characters are very different from your standard anime crowd but what really steals the show is the world itself and it’s wildlife. It’s simply beautiful, creative and artistic. A true feast for the eyes.
It’s not for everyone, 2+ hours is a bit much. It moves kind of slow and can be very weird in places. I enjoyed it, it’s not a classic, but it’s certainly something different.
