Wings of Honneamise is not one of my favorite anime, but still it's not one of the worse.. It takes place during a tension time between two countries having a race of weapons and technology in an alternate world... Alternate worlds are not a big deal for me, but what really disturbs me here is that this anime is shooting to be different in everything.. their cars and planes and even their clothes and the normal daily tools. Everything is totally different which is something that leave wondering.. why? The beauty of WoH is in its animation... since this is quite old, everything here is hand drawn, nothing computerized here, no sir. There is a certain quality in that.. you feel that the artist had put their love into this. The story is okay with me, not ground breaking. One soldier who wants to fly to the moon and sometime in, he meets a girl who work in a religious committee or something like that... The balance achieved between the action and events is quite good.

Nothing violence here but there is one brief scene of nudity. WoH could have been better if the story was handled better, the characters were developed more and if it has something I can relate more to.

Two words come to mind when I think about Wings of Honneamise. Long and boring. Of course that's not to say that WoH isn't a great movie, just simply that its flawed by a lot of stretches that had me looking at the clock wondering when it was going to be over. The story is excellent, and explores a bit of human nature and what drives us forward. The characters, while not extremely likable, seem realistic, which lends well to the anime more drama driven approach. An anime classic that should be seen by all anime fans at least once.

If I remember correctly, this was my first anime movie. I love storytelling, but this movie just didn't do it for me. I felt the movie was overly long and had many quiet or slow spots. Maybe I need to watch this movie again and see if my feeling has changed. Maybe I like more action in my anime, but I like many mainstream movies that are dramatic and not action orientated. From Earth to the Moon on HBO interested me more and they both deal with man's race for space (or the moon). To each his own I guess.

This movie is a blessing. It deals with a man's journey from being one of the mass members of society to being enlightened from finding one's self. The whole world this movie is built in has a great depth and feel from it.. from the interesting music work to the most amazing alternative reality (post WW2/pre Cold-War) aircraft design I have seen. The whole world caught me off-guard and drew me in, I'm still hooked after seeing the movie years later. It's definitely one of my top choice anime movies ever.

Set in an alternate history where mankind has not gone into space yet, Wings of Honneamise is easily one of my favorite movies ever. While there are some tiny bits of action, most of the movie is purely philosophical and tracks the main character's path of becoming the first man in space, and how he thinks it might change the world. After all these years it still boasts immaculate art and animation, as well as a great score by Oscar-winner Ryuichi Sakamoto. Highly recommended although definitely not for everyone.
