Enjoying the X movie had to do with expectations. Obviously,
fans of the X manga were expecting something better. I had the benefit
of hindsight and knew exactly what I was getting into: an attempt to stuff a billion
pages of manga into a 90 minute film. Not being an X fan, I found the film
somewhat enjoyable. I liked the visuals, and although the plot suffered from manga-to-movie
syndrome, it actually made sense. I was most surprised and impressed by the ending,
which I was sure was going to be a 'please wait for the manga to end' copout.
X the movie isn't going down in the records as a great film, nor would
I want it to. But there are far worse ways to spend a few hours. |

The popularity of the four ladies that make up CLAMP
manages to take hold of the US through their most hardcore and unedited works.
One of them just happens to be X/1999; which tells the tale of an epic
battle between the "Dragons of Earth" and the "Dragons of Heaven."
Fans of CLAMP are treated to a nifty cross-over with the characters from
Tokyo Babylon, Subaru and Seiichirou. Despite
its short length (as a movie) and its number of dead bodies; CLAMP still
manages to insert some cliches and humor into it. And most of the characters were
able to make themselves more 3-dimensional than 2-dimensional. Hopefully, the
TV series will follow the manga and tell us a better tale. |

Finally after viewing X the movie DVD and comparing
it against the mess that was on Sputnik, I can say it still is suffering from
"network buffering" problems. It looks amazing as per CLAMP's work but...
what is up with the story. I have seen worse stories in higher praised anime (Blood)
but X's story is pretty disjointed. The viewer follows the introduction
of Kamui, the death of his mother... and his trip to Tokyo to visit and protect
some old friends after receiving a vision of the destruction of Tokyo by a dreamwalker.
Two forces, the Dragons of Heaven and the Dragons of Earth duke it out to destroy/protect
Tokyo. With mass destruction and some pretty messy deaths how could you not like
the series, but the undeveloped and the lack of concern or care for any side or
character and a leading character that doesn't give a damn who wins in the long
run kinda makes the movie fall flat on its face. Nothing stands out in my mind
about the audio which is a bad thing. Overall it's a flop but with a OVA, and
TV series to follow the movie, it starts to make more sense and isn't such a waste
of time as it introduces most of the characters from the manga and upcoming TV
series. |

X... X... I heard a lot about it and have seen some pics of
it. Lots of people seem to like it so I decided, what the heck, I should try it.
I ended up watching something a la Ghost in the Shell : An overpraised
anime while all I see here is average - at least to me. There is a lot of super
natural powers and unlike Clamp's 'better' anime Tokyo Babylon, there is
an extensive use of it here. From the very beginning, you are thrown in the center
of the tumult with little explanation.. Just get the basic idea.. 2 sisters driving
2 close friends to fight each other and save/destroy the world. Lots of unnecessary
killing take place leading to a strange ending I have cursed my self for watching
the movie for. You know, the kind of feeling while watching a show "When
will it end" and then a big disappointment. I wonder, what was the goal for
creating such an anime? Entertainment or realistic human emotion? Probably neither. |
