Zone of the Enders - Idolo is a prequel based on the first Z.O.E game that was created for the Sony Playstation 2. I don't quite understand why this OVA has gotten medicore scores because it was absolutely fantastic for a 50-55 minute OVA. However, that's only my opinion. Zone of the Enders - Idolo does a superb job of creating a in-depth plot that all fans of the PS2 Z.O.E game should not miss. The plot shows some insight to the experimental Orbital Frames that gives players a better understanding of Z.O.E for PS2. Zone of the Enders - Idolo is about a pilot named Radium who is chosen to test a prototype orbital frame code named Idolo. The alloy, metatron, used to create Idolo has many unknown factors which creates a serious dilemma with the pilot's pysche. Without spoiling anything I won't mention anything else except the fact that orbital frames take a major role in the game; quite interesting and unique actually. The show is a mix of genres including tragedy, romance, action/basic mecha. The animation is fluid and very appealing to the eye. A variety of vivid detail and colors are used for the landscapes, characters, and orbital frames. Okay, basically what I'm trying to get across is the fact the art and animation kick ass, heh. The characters are quite memorable for such a short OVA as well as the various plot twist found along the way. And, once you've finished watching Zone of the Enders - Idolo you'll be taken aback by how symbolic and tragic this OVA is. It'll leave you totally speechless as it has with me. This is truly a show one must watch, especially if you take a liking to a short, but bittersweet OVA.

After playing Konami's Z.O.E. for the PS2 (has to be the only game that comes close to giving the player some real mecha fighting) and missing out on some huge parts of the story the 2167 (Idolo) timeline answered some questions from the PS2 game that takes place in 2172. The OVA by itself stands fine on its own and has a story arch that will leave the viewer happy but it does continue into the game(s) and TV series "Dolores" (another Gundam world). OK enough on that.. the OVA is has a decent love story and some really jaw dropping deaths. There is some interesting character development with the lead character's faults and further problems without ruining everything in the story. Music is fine and fits in well nothing stellar (Compared to the 2172 game music which is good stuff)... animation quality is subpar (bah at Sunrise's work) as I wished it was digital and CG usage (dreams of GONZO). It's a good watch for mecha fans and fits in with the games and TV series.

It's hard to review Idolo with out bringing the game that its based on into the picture. Zone of the Enders: Idolo was originally released as part of the limited edition Zone of the Enders bundle in Japan, and in all respects should have been a part of the game. The single 50 minute OVA explores the early history of the orbital frames, as well as the history of Viola. While playing the game isn't a requirement for enjoying Idolo, I'll have to say that a lot will be missed if you haven't. This ones essential viewing for people that have played the game and want a more flushed out story, and is a decent watch for fans of mecha action.
